A Mass Shooting in Monterey Park, CA “Demonstrates Once More that Gun Violence Must be Addressed Through Both Legislative and Cultural Change”

At Least 10 People are Dead and 10 More are Wounded Following a Mass Shooting Near Lunar New Year Celebrations

LOS ANGELES —  A day of Lunar New Year events in the predominantly Asian community of Monterey Park, California ended in tragedy when a gunman killed at least 10 people and wounded 10 more on Saturday night. Monterey Park is generally very safe, with just 8 other shootings in the last 9 years, according to Gun Violence Archive.

“This horrific shooting demonstrates once more that gun violence must be addressed through both legislative and cultural change,” said Nina Vinik, founder and executive director of Project Unloaded. “California has some of the nation’s strongest gun laws and on average, its residents are safer for it. But until we change the culture that has led America to be awash in guns, gun violence will continue to traumatize Americans where they live, work and socialize. We must be brave enough to state plainly that the guns are the problem and our nation will be safer only when it is home to fewer of them.”
