Teens ages 13 to 17 can earn a $40 gift card for helping create peer-to-peer firearm safety and mental health messaging at three Mecklenburg County sites.
Mecklenburg County is seeking 100 local teenagers to participate in a series of workshops Monday designed to put youth directly behind the creation of firearm safety and mental health campaigns.
Hosted by the county’s Office of Violence Prevention, in partnership with the national nonprofit Project Unloaded, the three simultaneous sessions will run on Sept. 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. during a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher workday. Participants ages 13 to 17 can register at forms.mecknc.gov and receive a $40 gift card for helping shape peer-to-peer messaging on gun violence prevention.
That payment was Project Unloaded’s condition, Ebony Rao, senior health program manager for the Office of Violence Prevention, said. “If we are engaging youth and getting youth feedback, that youth should be compensated for their time.”
