WBBM: After nearly 2 years, Highland Park screening revisits July 4 parade shooting

By Nancy Harty

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A gun violence prevention group will be showing a documentary on Tuesday night about Highland Park’s response to the parade shooting there almost two years ago.

The 20-minute film “Memorial” will be shown just down the street from where a gunman killed seven people and wounded dozens of others. The group Project Unloaded will be hosting the free screening of the documentary, which was released a year ago as part of the group’s efforts to educate people about gun violence in the name of prevention.

Project Unloaded Founder Nina Vinik grew up in Highland Park. With the second anniversary of the shooting coming up, she said residents may be ready to watch.

“Community members may want to come and remember those who were impacted by this,” she said. “We also feel like the panel discussion after the film is a good way to introduce folks to some solutions to gun violence.”
